The Benefit of Trauma-Informed Educational Workshops Across Sectors

This blog looks at the benefits of trauma-informed educational workshops, especially timely in light of the recent 16 days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

Gender-based violence is all too common, impacting 1 in 3 females globally and 1 in 4 in Canada. While these numbers are high, it is important to remember that this experience is often underreported.

Here in BC, efforts are underway trying to get the government to declare gender-based violence an epidemic (sign here). Efforts have been successful in Ontario and PEI, where they confirm they are dealing with an epidemic.

At its heart, gender-based violence is a relational power dynamic imbalance.

Gender-based violence is the driver of 23% of marriage breakdowns.

This Fall has been busy for The Mother Corp providing trauma-informed practice, gender-based violence, and trauma recovery educational workshops. Our holistic workshops use current peer-reviewed research to situate techniques and practices.

Trauma-informed practices are beneficial across populations and sectors.

One of the factors that set The Mother Corp apart is that our workshops are tailored to the audience.

Our workshops usually weave together evidence-based information, basics of neurobiology to situate practices, situational examples, best practices for trauma-informed relations and spaces, and concrete embodied skills to practice so that participants thoroughly understand how to incorporate these skills into their personal and professional lives.

Another factor that sets our work apart is we utilize lived and professional expertise to provide wholesome and realistic insights into navigating immense complexity.

Our workshops certainly resonate. Many workshop participants reach out after workshops to work with us doing one-on-one coaching to process and navigate their own situations.

Here are five testimonials we received for trauma-informed workshops at organizations and education training institutions:

A dedicated advocate for creating trauma-informed ecosystems, Chavisa’s insights are invaluable.

The workshop was really excellent. It was an informative introduction to trauma-informed care. The workshop was a huge success.

Chavisa was a guest facilitator and speaker with our YWCA Single Mothers’ Program. Her presentation was well prepared, grounded in knowledge of the systemic challenges our moms would be facing, and very client-focused. She worked with the participants, answering questions as they popped up, offering suggestions and information based on her experience working in high-conflict scenarios. Chavisa was approachable, relaxed and very well-informed, all of which put our participants at ease. What we really appreciated is how she took simple or familiar ideas such as self-care and communicating with an ex and was able to present them in a fresh way that was practical and applicable. Moms left feeling empowered, seen, and focused. We will definitely be inviting her back for future workshops or facilitated sessions with small groups as the opportunity arises.

I would like to thank you for joining us and sharing your immense knowledge with us. Co-parenting is one of the trickiest relationships to navigate as no one is ever truly prepared or expecting to be a part of such a relationship in their life. That is why the work you do is so important. Your presentation focused on ways to navigate through and provided evidence and fact-based education to the group members and ensured that while fostering a healthy co-parenting relationship is important, it’s equally important to show that effort and love to yourself as well. We will definitely reach out in the future.

Chavisa lent her passion and expertise to co-facilitate a workshop about gender-based violence and trauma recovery at Capilano University. It was a delight to have her bring her knowledge and perspectives to the conversation surrounding trauma-informed practice. Chavisa is clearly determined in her pursuits of empowerment and justice for people who’ve experienced trauma through gender-based violence. She was adept at engaging the students in important discussions, providing thought-provoking questions, facts, and examples that meaningfully directed everyone to a better understanding of the subject matter. Chavisa’s relaxed attitude and positive energy were helpful in encouraging collaborative conversations about very complex and difficult topics, and she handled everyone’s experience with empathy and care.

The Mother Corp works to serve and support people impacted by trauma. Data demonstrate that’s most of us. Together, we can work to destigmatize trauma and take care of each other.

Gaining trauma-informed practices and trauma recovery skills grounded in neurobiology helps people feel more capable and able to meaningfully manage and navigate. This knowledge and skill set is an incredibly empowering gift we can give ourselves, our families, friends, colleagues, teams, and communities.

We welcome partnerships to advance trauma-informed knowledge specific to the population you serve.

If you're interested in learning about trauma-informed practices, gender-based violence, and trauma recovery for yourself and your team, we would be happy to discuss tailored workshops to meet your needs.
