Tony Parsons to anchor CBC Vancouver local news

Veteran B.C. news anchor Tony Parsons is returning to the Vancouver airwaves as host of the CBC’s supper-hour newscast, the corporation announced on Monday afternoon.

Parsons will co-host the CBC local newscasts with Gloria Macarenko. He replaces former co-anchor Ian Hanomansing, who left last week to take up a position as a replacement anchor and reporter with CBC News: The National.

Parsons recently retired from the top anchor spot at Global TV in Vancouver and became host of the 10 p.m. PT local newscast on CHEK television, an independent station in Victoria.

He remains one of the most recognizable faces in B.C. news, Johnny Michel, the managing director for CBC’s B.C. region, said in a statement.

“Tony Parsons has been synonymous with local news in Vancouver for 35 years and we’re thrilled to welcome him to the CBC News Vancouver team,” said Michel.

Under the new agreement, Parsons will host the newscast for CBC in Vancouver from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., then appear at 10 p.m. on CHEK’s late-night Vancouver Island newscast.

As It Happens host Barbara Budd to retire

Barbara Budd, longtime co-host of the CBC Radio One current affairs program As It Happens, announced last night that she will be leaving the show after 17 years. Her last broadcast will be Friday, April 30.

Budd’s voice has become a familiar one to CBC radio listeners over the 26 years that she has been part of the CBC family.Barbara Budd 200x300

“My association with As It Happens goes back to 1987, when show scripts were hammered out on clunky Underwood typewriters and you actually had to dial a telephone! That’s when I first regularly started filling in for the remarkable Alan Maitland, and then of course for the past 17 years as co-host myself,” says Budd. “For all that time, it’s not only been a real delight to me, but a tremendous honour to share some of the most exciting stories and people in the world with our audience.”

“As one of only two co-hosts in the show’s history, Barbara has introduced audiences in Canada, the United States and online around the world, to thousands of stories, events and people great and small,” says Denise Donlon, general manager of CBC Radio. “The one great constant, thanks to her unique style and tone, is the way those stories caught the imagination of As It Happens listeners. Barbara has made a significant contribution to a legendary CBC program and along with thanks, we offer her our very best wishes as she embarks on her next great adventures.”

For more than 40 years, using the telephone as its main communications link, As It Happens has explored the heart of a story, whether it’s happening in the streets of Belgrade, the dockyards of Vancouver, the boardrooms of Bay Street or the kitchens of Paris. On even the most complex and troubling issues, As It Happens is legendary for providing its audience with the story behind the story.

A formal search for a new co-host will begin shortly.

Q reaches 10 million views on YouTube

http://www.wonderboy.ca/jian/jian-14.jpgQTV, the YouTube channel for Q with host Jian Ghomeshi, has reached a new milestone of 10 million video views on just one of the many platforms on which the program reaches its audience. The massive number was reached on March 22.

“This is a remarkable number that we never expected hit this quickly,” said Ghomeshi. “It’s truly gratifying that the Q ascent in social media (from YouTube to the cbc.ca/Q website to the podcasts) continues to grow by massive leaps. Kudos to our tiny but powerful QTV team of Ben Aylsworth and Marc Whiteway for their amazing efforts.”

In just two years, the QTV channel has become one of the most viewed and most subscribed Canadian channels on YouTube. The notorious Billy Bob Thornton interview with Ghomeshi has itself garnered more than two million views. Many of these viewers have stayed to become loyal fans of the program and its ebullient host.

“This is a wonderful achievement, one that underscores our ability to reach big audiences with great content on all platforms,” exclaimed Denise Donlon, general manager, CBC Radio.

In addition to the YouTube channel, Q airs twice daily, Monday to Friday, on CBC Radio One; three times daily, Monday to Friday, on Sirius satellite radio; and four times a week on bold TV. The program also hosts a popular blog on its CBC website and offers daily audio podcasts and weekly video podcasts.

Added Ghomeshi: “Not sure if you heard the show today (March 22) but I am now engaged to 92-year-old Phyllis Diller. I would expect that congratulations are in order.”
